A translated document certified by a sworn translator is necessary in the case of official documents meant to be submitted to foreign authorities. If documents issued by the authorities of one country are used in another country where the language of the first country is not spoken, the documents must be translated and certified by a sworn translator. The need for certifying a document depends on the authority to whom the documents are submitted. Sometimes a translation certified by the bureau is sufficient, but at other times, a sworn translation is required. Sworn translation is an official and accepted translation that can always be used in foreign countries.
Often, the legalisation of a document, or adding an apostille, is necessary for certifying the authenticity of an official document and its issuance by a competent authority to the authorities of another country. Our price list contains more information about additional services.

Why is notarised translation no longer provided?
Starting from 1 January 2015, the system of official certification of documents was changed in Estonia. In the past, both notaries and sworn translators had the authority to certify translations, but starting from 2020, only sworn translators can certify documents.
Who is a sworn translator?
A sworn translator is a translator who has been granted sole competence by the state for providing official translations of documents. Sworn translators must pass a sworn translator’s examination organised by the state for checking the level of legal and linguistic knowledge. They must also pass a professional suitability interview. Sworn translators are specialists who ensure the quality and reliability of your translation projects. In addition to translations, a sworn translator performs other tasks related to translations and certifying official translations.

What happens if there are no sworn translators for my language pair in Estonia?
If there are no translators in Estonia for the requested language, the document must first be translated into a more common language (such as English, German, or Russian), and then, into the requested language spoken in the country where the document is going to be submitted. As an alternative, the translation can be ordered in the country where the document is going to be submitted if a suitable sworn translator operates there.
